1 What VS Remote is (and what it isn't)#
VS Remote lets you operate your VS console from a distance: move faders, pans and sends, mute, change track status, run the transport (play, stop, record), adjust EQ, dynamics and effects, save and load scenes, and watch the meters. All from the screen of a tablet, a laptop or a phone.
Here is how it works:
- An Android phone (the "bridge phone") connects to the console over MIDI, with a USB-MIDI adapter.
- That phone and the tablets join the same WiFi network.
- On each tablet you open the console in the browser: you don't install anything on the tablets.
- Several people can use it at the same time. What one person moves, the others see, and the physical console moves too (motorized faders included).
You don't need Internet either: a WiFi router is enough, even with no Internet access.
2 What you need#
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| VS console | VS-2480, VS-2000, VS-1880, VS-1824, VS-1680, VS-880EX or VS-R880, with its MIDI IN and MIDI OUT connectors. |
| Android phone (bridge phone) | Android 8 or later, with a USB-C port that works as a "host" (OTG). Almost every current phone does. A dedicated phone, not your personal one (see below). |
| Standard USB-MIDI adapter | Any class compliant USB-MIDI interface (one that works without drivers). For example: UM-ONE mk2, M-Audio Uno, CME U2MIDI, iConnectivity mio and similar. It must have MIDI IN and MIDI OUT. |
| OTG cable or adapter | To connect the USB-MIDI adapter to the phone's port (USB-C or micro-USB, depending on the phone). |
| USB hub with charging (recommended) | A USB-C hub with a charging input (Power Delivery / "PD pass-through"). It lets you connect the MIDI adapter and the charger at the same time, so the phone doesn't run out of battery in long sessions. |
| WiFi router | Any home router. It doesn't need Internet. |
| Tablets, laptops or phones | With an up-to-date browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari). Android, iPad, iPhone, Windows, Mac or Linux. |
3 Physical connections#
3.1 MIDI: the cables cross over#
The USB-MIDI adapter has two plugs, usually marked IN and OUT (sometimes with colors or arrows). They connect crossed over:
- Adapter OUT → console MIDI IN (this is how the app sends commands to the console).
- Console MIDI OUT → adapter IN (this is how the console tells the app what's happening: faders moving, meters, counter).
3.2 USB: the adapter to the phone#
- Without charging: USB-MIDI adapter → OTG cable/adapter → phone.
- With charging (recommended): USB-MIDI adapter → USB-C hub with charging → phone, with the phone charger plugged into the hub (into the input marked PD, "Power" or with the charging symbol).
With the hub, the phone charges while it controls the console: ideal for long rehearsals and shows. Use a good-quality charger.
The app detects the adapter on its own as soon as you plug it in. If you unplug it and plug it back in, it reconnects without you doing anything.
3.3 If you have an MB-24 meter bridge (VS-2480)#
The MB-24 connects to the console's MIDI OUT, the same one the app uses. You don't have to choose: the MB-24 has a MIDI THRU connector that re-sends, unchanged, everything it receives. Chain them like this:
- VS-2480 MIDI OUT → MB-24 MIDI IN
- MB-24 MIDI THRU → USB-MIDI adapter IN
- Adapter OUT → VS-2480 MIDI IN (as always)
The MB-24 must be switched on for the MIDI to pass through to the app.
4 Set up the console (just once)#
For the console and the app to understand each other, the console needs these settings. You do this only once: the console remembers them. The same table is inside the app, in SETUP → Console, and it shows the one for the selected model.
Sections 4.1 to 4.3 are the VS-2480 settings. For the VS-1880, VS-1824 and VS-1680, see 4.4; for the VS-2000, 4.5; for the VS-880EX and VS-R880, 4.6.
4.1 UTILITY → MIDI (VS-2480)#
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| MIDI OUT/THRU | Out |
| MIXER CONTROL TYPE | Excl (recommended; the app sets it by itself when it connects; C.C. also works, see 22.1) |
| SysEx.Rx Sw | On |
| SysEx.Tx Sw | On |
| SCENE P.C. Rx Sw | On |
| Effect P.C. Rx Sw | On |
| Effect C.C. Rx Sw | On |
| DEVICE ID | 17 (if you use another number, enter it in the app: SETUP → Console → Console DEVICE ID) |
| MMC MODE | MASTER (recommended; SLAVE also works, see 22.1) |
| MMC SOURCE | MIDI |
| CONTROL LOCAL Sw | On |
4.2 UTILITY → SYSTEM → EXT LEVEL METER (meters, VS-2480)#
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| EXT LEVEL METER | MB24 |
| DISPLAY SECTION | TRACK MIXER 1-24 |
| METER POSITION | POST (post fader) |
| TIME DISPLAY | TIME CODE |
4.3 UTILITY → SYNC (VS-2480)#
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| SYNC MODE | INT |
| MIDI OUT SYNC Gen. | MTC (with the counter in TIME CODE, the time reaches the app over MTC) |
4.4 VS-1880, VS-1824 and VS-1680#
On these models the settings are in the SYSTEM → MIDI menu: press [SHIFT] + [F5 (SYSTEM)] and then [F4 (MIDI)].
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| SYSTEM → MIDI → Control Type | Excl (recommended; the app sets it by itself when it connects) |
| SYSTEM → MIDI → SysEx.Rx | On |
| SYSTEM → MIDI → SysEx.Tx | On |
| SYSTEM → MIDI → MIDI Model ID | VS-1880 (on the VS-1880 and the VS-1824; on the VS-1824, with VS-1680 tracks 17-18 can't be controlled. The VS-1680 doesn't have this setting) |
| SYSTEM → MIDI → P.C.Scene | On |
| SYSTEM → MIDI → P.C.Eff | On |
| SYSTEM → MIDI → C.C.Eff | On |
| SYSTEM → MIDI → MMC | SLAVE |
| SYSTEM → MIDI → MIDI Thru | OUT |
| SYSTEM → MIDI → Device ID | 17 |
| [SHIFT] + [EXT SYNC] → Sync Source | INT |
| [SHIFT] + [EXT SYNC] → Sync Gen. | MTC |
- The meters turn on by themselves on connect: there's nothing to set up.
- Phantom power (48V) can't be controlled via MIDI: on the VS-1680 and the VS-1824 it is a panel switch.
- In SETUP → Console the app shows the table for the selected model.
4.5 VS-2000#
The MIDI settings are on the MIDI PARAMETER screen: hold [SHIFT] and press F4 (UTIL), then F5 (MIDI) (if MIDI isn't shown above F5, press PAGE). The sync settings are on SYNC PARAMETER: from there, F6 (EXIT) and F6 (SYNC).
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| MIDI PARAMETER → MIDI OUT/THRU | Out |
| MIDI PARAMETER → MIXER CONTROL TYPE | Excl (recommended; the app sets it by itself when it connects) |
| MIDI PARAMETER → SysEx. Rx Sw | On |
| MIDI PARAMETER → SysEx. Tx Sw | On |
| MIDI PARAMETER → SCENE P.C. Rx Sw | On |
| MIDI PARAMETER → DEVICE ID | 17 (if you use another number, enter it in the app: SETUP → Console → DEVICE ID) |
| MIDI PARAMETER → MMC MODE | MASTER (recommended; SLAVE also works) |
| MIDI PARAMETER → CONTROL LOCAL Sw | On |
| SYNC PARAMETER → SYNC MODE | INT |
| SYNC PARAMETER → MIDI OUT SYNC Gen. | MTC (the counter reaches the app via MTC) |
- The VS-2000 doesn't send meters over MIDI: the app doesn't draw them and levels are shown on the console's display. There's no meter bridge or meter setting to configure either.
- Phantom power (48V) can't be controlled via MIDI.
4.6 VS-880EX and VS-R880#
The settings are in the SYSTEM menu: press [SYSTEM] several times until "SYS MIDI PRM ?" appears (or "SYS Sync/Tempo ?" for sync), press [YES], move between settings with PARAMETER [▶▶] and change the value with the TIME/VALUE dial. The VS-R880 has the same menu.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| SYS MIDI PRM → CtrType | Excl (recommended; the app sets it by itself when it connects) |
| SYS MIDI PRM → SysEx.Rx / SysEx.Tx | On / On |
| SYS MIDI PRM → MIDIThr | Out |
| SYS MIDI PRM → MMC | MASTER (reports PLAY/STOP/REC; SLAVE also works) |
| SYS MIDI PRM → DevID | 17 |
| SYS Sync/Tempo → Syn:Source | INT |
| SYS Sync/Tempo → Gen. | MTC |
- The meters turn on by themselves on connect: there's nothing to set up.
- Phantom power (48V) can't be controlled via MIDI.
5 Install the app on the bridge phone#
You install the VS Remote app from Google Play, the official Android store, like any other app:
- On the bridge phone, open Google Play (Play Store).
- Search for VS Remote. You can also get there from the Google Play button at www.vs-remote.com.ar.
- Tap Install.
- When it finishes, tap Open or find the VS Remote icon on the phone.
- Requirement: Android 8 or later. If the phone isn't compatible, Google Play won't let you install it.
- Android 17 or later: the first time you tap Start bridge, Android asks whether VS Remote may use nearby devices. Choose Allow: it is what lets the tablets connect to the bridge (the app doesn't search for or track other devices). If you denied it, the Local network permission missing warning shows up at the top with the Grant the permission button.
- The tablets don't install anything: the console opens in the browser (section 8).
- Updates: they come through Google Play, like any app's (automatically if you have that turned on, or from Play Store → Manage apps & device). Updating keeps your scenes, projects, names and settings.
- Better not to update in the middle of a show or a recording: while it updates, the bridge closes and the tablets lose the connection until you start it again. If you have automatic updates turned on, in Play Store you can turn them off just for VS Remote (app listing → ⋮ menu → uncheck Enable auto update) and update when it suits you.
6 The WiFi network#
6.1 How everything connects#
- The bridge phone joins the router's WiFi, like any phone (Settings → WiFi).
- All tablets, laptops and phones join the same WiFi.
- You don't need Internet.
6.2 Network tips#
- Use your own router for the gear (for example, a small one that travels with the console). Networks in bars, venues or theaters are often overloaded or isolate devices from each other.
- Avoid "guest" networks and turn off client isolation (AP isolation / client isolation) if the router has it: that option keeps the tablet from "seeing" the bridge phone.
- Reserve the bridge phone's address on the router (an option called "static DHCP", "IP reservation" or "fixed IP" for that device). That way the address doesn't change from one day to the next, and tablets that already have it saved keep getting in with no trouble.
- If the router has 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, either one works; in places with lots of WiFi around, 5 GHz usually works better.
- Place the router near the stage or the console, up high and clear of metal obstacles.
7 The bridge phone#
This is the phone connected to the console. Its screen shows the system status. You control the console from the tablets, not from this phone.
The screen uses the same colors as the console on the tablets. At the top is the bar with the logo, the name VS Remote and the bridge status (ACTIVE, DEMO, STOPPED or ERROR).
7.1 The address for the tablets#
At the very top you see the address to open on the tablets, in green letters like the console's counter, for example:
http://192.168.0.23:8080
and a QR code with the same address. If the address is long, the text gets smaller or wraps to two lines: you always see all of it. If the phone is not connected to WiFi, you see a notice asking you to connect it instead of the address.
7.2 Starting and stopping the bridge#
- Start bridge: starts the remote control. From then on, the tablets can connect.
- Stop bridge: turns it off. The tablets are disconnected (the console keeps sounding as usual).
- Demo mode (no console): before you start, this switch lets you try the app without a console. It simulates a console so you can practice or show the system. Below it you choose which console to simulate, in two rows (VS-2480, VS-1680, VS-1824, VS-1880, VS-2000, VS-880EX or VS-R880). For real use, leave it off.
While the bridge is active, Android shows a persistent notification from VS Remote with the address for the tablets. Tap it to go back to the app.
7.3 Status#
With the bridge active you see:
- MIDI: (adapter name) in green: the USB-MIDI adapter is connected and ready.
- MIDI: no USB interface in yellow: the adapter is not detected. Check the OTG cable or the hub.
- Connected clients: N: how many screens (tablets, laptops and phones) are using the console right now.
7.4 Battery saving (VERY important)#
Android puts apps "to sleep" to save battery. For the control to keep working with the phone's screen off or locked, the app must be excluded from that optimization:
- While the app is not excluded, the phone shows the card "Battery optimized: it may stop the bridge". The app does not change this by itself: you have to do it.
- Tap Open battery settings: Android's battery optimization list opens. Find VS Remote and choose "Don't optimize" (on some phones, "Unrestricted").
- Go back to the app: the card disappears. The Battery settings button at the bottom of the screen opens the same list whenever you want to check it.
Samsung, Xiaomi, Redmi, Poco, Huawei, Honor, Oppo, Realme, Motorola and other phones have extra settings that you should also check:
- Samsung: Settings → Battery → Background usage limits → remove VS Remote from "Sleeping apps" and add it to "Never sleeping apps".
- Xiaomi / Redmi / Poco: Settings → Apps → VS Remote → Battery saver → No restrictions; and turn on Autostart.
- Huawei / Honor: Settings → Battery → App launch → VS Remote → Manage manually, with everything turned on.
- Oppo / Realme / OnePlus: Settings → Battery → VS Remote → Allow background activity.
- On all of them: don't use "Extreme power saving" mode while you play.
With this done, you can lock the bridge phone's screen: the control keeps working.
7.5 Access PIN (optional)#
On the ACCESS PIN card you can enter a number with 4 to 8 digits and tap Save. The top right corner shows on when a PIN is set, or no PIN.
- With a PIN, any tablet that connects is read-only (it sees everything but can't move anything) until it enters the PIN.
- The musicians' personal monitors (section 20) don't need the PIN: each one can only change its own mix.
- To remove it, delete the number and tap Remove.
7.6 If you see "An error was logged"#
If the system had a problem (for example, the USB adapter disconnected for a moment), a card "An error was logged" appears. The control usually keeps working.
- Copy: copies the details so you can send them to support (paste them into WhatsApp or an email).
- Clear: clears the notice.
7.7 Version and website#
At the bottom of the screen you find the app version (for example "Version 0.1.0 (1)", the same one shown on Google Play), the link to www.vs-remote.com.ar and the legal notices. If you ask for support, tell us which version you have.
7.8 Language#
The app is in Spanish if the phone is set to Spanish, and in English otherwise. In the LANGUAGE card you can choose Automatic, Español or English; it changes right away, including the notification text. The language is the same for everyone: what you pick here also applies to the tablets and the MOREME phones (and if it is changed on a tablet, it changes here). With Automatic, each device uses its own language.
8 Opening the console on tablets, laptops and phones#
8.1 Getting in#
- Connect the tablet to the same WiFi as the bridge phone.
- Scan the QR code on the bridge phone's screen with the tablet's camera, or open the browser and type the address exactly as shown (for example
http://192.168.0.23:8080). - The console appears.
You can connect several tablets, laptops and phones at once. They all see the same thing in real time.
8.2 Full screen#
The top bar has the ⛶ button: it hides the browser bar to give you more room. Tap it again to exit.
- It works on Android, iPad and laptops.
- On iPhone the browser doesn't allow it: use "Add to Home Screen" (below), which opens the app in full screen.
- On iPad, Safari leaves an X in the top left corner (the app makes room for it so it doesn't cover the buttons) and exits full screen if you swipe down from the top edge. A web page can't turn that off: if it bothers you, set it up as an app with "Add to Home Screen" (section 8.3), which opens without the X and without that gesture.
8.3 Setting it up as an app (recommended)#
This puts an icon on the tablet that opens the console directly, in full screen:
- Android (Chrome): menu ⋮ → Add to Home screen (or "Install app").
- iPad / iPhone (Safari): Share button → Add to Home Screen.
- Laptop (Chrome or Edge): install icon in the address bar, or menu → Install VS Remote.
8.4 Which device for what#
- Tablet (recommended, landscape): the full experience, 8 channels per screen.
- Laptop: same as the tablet; you drag faders and knobs with the mouse, and a double click works like a double tap.
- Phone: shows only MOREME, the personal monitor (section 20), in portrait and landscape. You can't operate the full console on such a small screen: use a tablet or a laptop for that.
8.5 Connection notices#
At the top of the console you may see:
- "No connection to the bridge · reconnecting…" (red): the tablet lost WiFi or the bridge stopped. It reconnects by itself as soon as it's back.
- "VS-1880 not connected: changes don't reach the console" (yellow; it starts with your model's name: VS-2480, VS-1880…): the tablet is connected to the phone, but the phone doesn't detect the MIDI adapter or the console.
9 First use: step-by-step setup#
- Make the physical connections (section 3) and turn on the console.
- Check the console settings (section 4). Only the first time.
- Connect the bridge phone and the tablets to the same WiFi (section 6).
- Open VS Remote on the bridge phone, tap Start bridge and exclude the app from battery saving with Open battery settings (section 7.4).
- Check that it says MIDI: (adapter name) in green.
- On the tablet, scan the QR code or type the address (section 8).
- When it connects, the app reads the console's current state (it takes a few seconds): faders, pans, mutes, EQ, effects and the rest match what the console has.
- To check that everything works: move a fader on the console and watch it move on the tablet; then move one on the tablet and watch it move on the console.
10 How to use it: gestures and conventions#
| Gesture | What it does |
|---|---|
| Drag a fader | Raises or lowers the level. |
| Double tap a fader | Sets it to 0 dB. |
| Drag up/down on a knob | Changes the value (pan, EQ, dynamics, effects). |
| Double tap a knob | Returns it to its neutral value (pan to center, gain to 0, etc.). |
| FINE (button to the right of MIX) | Faders and knobs move more slowly, for fine adjustments. |
| Press and hold the name of a channel (top of the strip) | Opens the channel menu (section 13). |
| EDIT (small button next to the bottom name of each strip, the MAIN and each DAW track) | Opens EDIT for that channel. You can also double tap the bottom name or the dB value. |
| Press and hold for 1 second | For sensitive actions: REC, 48V, unlocking the lock. This keeps you from turning them on by accident. |
| Tap twice a button that asks for confirmation | Loading scenes, deleting, recalling console scenes: the first tap asks ("Send all to the console?") and the second one confirms. |
What "?" means#
When the app doesn't know the value a control has on the console, it shows "?" (sometimes with a small orange dot). This happens, for example, right after connecting or after recalling a scene from the console itself. It clears up by itself when:
- the app finishes reading the console's state,
- someone moves that control (on the console or in the app), or
- a scene from the app is loaded.
What you see when you open a tablet#
The tablet doesn't store the mix: it shows what the bridge phone knows about the console at that moment, and every tablet sees the same thing. The bridge finds out in three ways:
- Reading the whole console when the MIDI adapter is connected (and after recalling a scene from the console). With Extended control turned on (SETUP → Console), it brings in faders, pans, sends, mutes, EQ, dynamics, effects and routing. It takes a few seconds: if you open the tablet while it's reading, you'll see the "?" turn into values.
- Listening to what the console reports by itself: if someone moves a fader or changes a status on the console, every tablet shows it.
- Whatever is changed from the app.
So if you turn on the console, make changes, connect the phone and then open the tablet, you see what the console has. What can't be read: the preamp gain (the GAIN knobs are analog), the names of the console's scenes, what's recorded on the disk and, on every model except the VS-2480, phantom power.
If the app on the phone restarts, it reads the console again when the adapter reconnects. The "Last session (auto)" scene doesn't load by itself: it's there so you can go back to that state by hand (section 19).
Values in dB#
On the VS-2480 and the VS-2000 faders show the value in dB, just like the console display: 0.0 is unity gain, +6.0 is the maximum and -∞ is silence. On the VS-1880, VS-1824, VS-1680, VS-880EX and VS-R880 the fader shows 0 to 127, without dB.
Strip colors#
Channel strips have background colors by type: inputs, tracks, effect returns and auxes are easy to tell apart at a glance. You can also give each channel its own color (section 13): the strip is tinted with that color and has a stripe of it at the top and bottom.
11 The top bar#
From left to right:
- VS Remote logo.
- MIXER / DAW: tap it anywhere to switch between the console (MIXER) and the timeline with the tracks (DAW, section 16.6). MIXER takes you back to the last console page you were using.
- MIX · FX · SENDS · TRACKS · METERS · ROUTE · SCENES · SETUP: the console pages. ROUTE shows and changes the routing (section 18). FX goes straight to effect editing (EFFECT tab) for the last processor you used. You open EDIT from the EDIT button on each channel (section 15).
- Counter (green LCD): the recording position, just like on the console (hours:minutes:seconds:frames). Next to it is the active PROJECT (section 19.1; with an asterisk * if the mix changed since it was saved) or, if there's no project, the last SCENE loaded. Tap it to go to SCENES.
- Transport:
- ⏮ to start: takes the console to 00:00:00:00.
- ■ stop.
- ▶ play (turns green while playing).
- ● REC: you have to press and hold it for 1 second to start recording (so you don't record by accident). It blinks red while recording.
- 🔐 LOCKED: appears only if the bridge has a PIN and this tablet hasn't entered it yet (section 23), in place of the screen lock. On screens up to 1600 px wide (most tablets) you only see the orange lock 🔐.
- 🔒 / 🔓 Lock: locks the screen so nothing moves by accident (section 23).
- ⛶ Full screen (section 8.2).
- Ui≡: opens or closes the quick panel (section 21).
12 MIX: the mix#
This is the main screen: 8 channels at a time, the MAIN on the right and the bank selector.
12.1 Layers#
The layers sit below the top bar:
- IN 1-8, IN 9-16, IN 17-24: the 24 input channels (input mixer).
- TR 1-8, TR 9-16, TR 17-24: the 24 tracks (track mixer).
- FX RTN: the 8 effect returns.
- AUX MST: the masters of the 8 auxes.
- DCA: shows up if you set up DCAs (section 22.3).
- Views (buttons with a dotted border): show up if you set up your own views, for example "Drums" or "Vocals" (section 22.3).
On a tablet you can also swipe the row of channels with your finger.
12.2 The channel strip#
From top to bottom:
- Color stripe: the color you gave the channel.
- Channel name. Press and hold it to open the channel menu.
- Tags: DCA1…4 if it belongs to a DCA, LINK if it is stereo-linked, ME if it is "yours" in the personal monitor mix.
- 48V (IN 1-8 only, VS-2480): phantom power for the matching XLR input (see 12.3).
- Loaded effect (FX RTN only): the effect name, in the color of its type. Double-tap: opens that effect for editing.
- PAN (or BAL on stereo channels): pan knob. Double-tap = center.
- Track status (tracks only): OFF / REC / PLAY buttons (section 16).
- Fader with its dB scale and the meter next to it.
- Value in dB. Double-tap: opens EDIT.
- M (mute) and S (solo).
- Short name (IN 1, TR 5…). Double-tap: opens EDIT.
- Bottom color stripe.
Mute and solo:
- M mutes the channel on the console (it turns red).
- S solos the channel (it turns yellow).
- On AUX MST and MAIN, M pulls the fader down to -∞, and when you unmute it goes back exactly where it was.
12.3 Phantom power (48V)#
Only on the VS-2480, with extended control (on the other models phantom power can't be controlled via MIDI). On IN 1 to IN 8 there is a 48V button: it turns phantom power (+48V) on or off for the XLR input with that number.
- To change it, press and hold it for 1 second (it turns amber while it counts). Red = on.
- 48V belongs to the physical input: if you changed on the console which input feeds each channel, the 48V on "IN 3" is XLR input 3, not necessarily channel 3.
- It is not saved or loaded with scenes, on purpose: switching phantom on or off suddenly can cause a loud thump in the speakers or damage ribbon mics.
- Pull the channel down before you turn phantom on. Never turn it on with ribbon mics connected.
12.4 The MAIN#
On the right is the MAIN strip (reddish background): the stereo L/R master, with its balance (BAL), its fader, stereo meter and M.
12.5 FADER BANK#
The column on the right:
- MAIN L/R: the faders show the main mix (the normal mode).
- AUX 1 … AUX 8: "Sends on Fader". The channel faders become the sends to that aux: great for building a musician's monitor mix by moving faders as if it were the main mix. You can tell because everything turns orange, and the strip on the right becomes the master of that AUX. Tap MAIN L/R to go back.
- FINE: fine adjustment mode.
12.6 Meters: what the console measures#
The VS-2480 measures one section at a time
The VS-2480 sends its meters over MIDI with the same system the MB-24 meter bridge uses: 24 meters from a single section at a time, plus the MAIN (L/R master), which always comes through. The section is chosen on the console in UTILITY → SYSTEM → EXT LEVEL METER → DISPLAY SECTION, and the app changes it for you based on the layer you are looking at:
| Layer you are viewing in the app | Section the console measures | The button says |
|---|---|---|
| IN 1-8, IN 9-16, IN 17-24 | INPUT MIXER | ON · IN |
| TR 1-8, TR 9-16, TR 17-24 | TRACK MIXER | ON · TR |
| FX RTN | FX RETURN | ON · FX |
| AUX MST | AUX / DIR | ON · AUX |
What this means, so it doesn't catch you off guard:
- Strips from a section that is not being measured show a striped pattern instead of the meter. It's not a fault: the console is not sending those meters.
- You can't see at the same time the track meters and the input meters, or the channel meters and the aux meters.
- In Sends on Fader (FADER BANK → AUX) the channel meters show the channel's signal, not how much you send to that AUX, and the AUX master strip has no meter.
- The console almost never measures the AUX / DIR section: on the AUX MST layer it's normal not to see the aux meters.
- With METER POSITION = POST, a channel with its fader down shows no level even if signal is coming in (that's normal for "post fader").
- If several tablets are on different layers, the last one that changed layers wins; on the other one some strips show the striped pattern.
The METERS button
To the right of the layers is the METERS button. It always says what the console is measuring right now:
- ON · TR (or IN, FX, AUX): the meters follow the layer you are viewing.
- OFF: turns off the channel meters on the console (the MAIN keeps going). Use it if you want to pick the section from the console's panel: with ON, the app switches it back to your layer's section.
- With ON, the app checks every 3 seconds that the console is still measuring your layer's section, and if not, it asks again.
Changing what is measured (with the console stopped)
- With the console in STOP, tap the layer you want to see (for example IN 1-8).
- In less than a second the button changes to ON · IN and that layer's meters start moving.
- Press PLAY or REC as usual.
During playback or recording: the change waits for STOP
The VS-2480 does not let you change the meter section while it plays or records. This is a limit of the console itself, not the app: we tested it on the console, and in play it ignores the request. If you switch to another layer during play:
- The button keeps showing what is being measured (for example ON · TR).
- Next to it, in small orange text, you see "IN on STOP": your request is queued.
- The strips of the new layer show the striped pattern (never levels from other channels).
To change it:
- Tap ■ STOP (in the app or on the console).
- The console switches on its own to what you asked for, and the button changes to ON · IN:
- Press PLAY again: recording continues from where you stopped, now with the IN meters.
If you go back to the layer being measured (TR, in the example) before you stop, the notice disappears and nothing changes.
The same happens in the DAW with the meter bridge at the top (TR / IN / AUX), and the notice shows above the meters, also saying what is measured now. The same goes for the METERS page (section 17):
Other models
VS-1680, VS-1824 and VS-1880 send all meters at once (tracks, inputs, send buses, monitor and master). On those models there are no sections, the METERS button next to the layers does not appear and this limit does not exist: in Sends on Fader and in MOREME the bus master (FX1, FX2, AUX…) also shows its meter.
VS-880EX and VS-R880 also send everything at once: the 8 tracks, the 8 inputs, the AUX bus and the master.
VS-2000: the console doesn't send meters over MIDI. The app leaves the meter space empty (strips keep their shape) and says so in METERS and in the DAW; levels are shown on the console's display.
13 The channel menu#
Press and hold the name of any channel (at the top of the strip) and its menu opens.
- Name: type the name (for example "Kick", "John vocal"). It shows on every tablet.
- Color: tap one of the circles. The strip is tinted with that color. ∅ removes it.
- Stereo link with…: links the channel with its pair (1-2, 3-4…). What you move on one is copied to the other. With mirrored pan, moving one pan sends the other to the opposite side (great for stereo sources).
- DCA: adds or removes the channel from DCAs 1 to 4.
- Mute groups: adds or removes the channel from mute groups.
- Views: adds or removes the channel from your own views.
- Copy mix / Paste: copies a channel's fader, pan and sends and pastes them on another.
- Reset pan/sends: pan to center and all sends at -∞.
- Open in EDIT: goes to the full channel editor.
To close it: ✕, tap outside the menu, or press Escape on a laptop.
14 SENDS: sends to the auxes#
The SENDS page is the same view as MIX, but always in sends mode:
- Pick the aux in the FADER BANK on the right (AUX 1 … AUX 8).
- At the top you see the orange band SENDS → AUX n (and the aux name if you gave it one, for example "Drummer monitor").
- Each fader is how much of that channel goes to that aux. The knob above it is the send pan (auxes come in pairs: 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8).
- The strip on the right is the master of that AUX.
SENDS only shows the layers that have sends (inputs, tracks and returns). To go back to the main mix, tap MIX in the top bar.
15 EDIT: everything about one channel#
To get there: tap the EDIT button next to the bottom name of each strip (also on the MAIN and on each DAW track), double-tap the bottom name or the value of a strip, or choose Open in EDIT in the channel menu. For effects, use the FX button in the top bar.
15.1 Header#
- ◀ (previous channel) and (next channel) ▶: show the name of the channel you'll move to. On an effect return they step only from effect to effect (FX 1 → FX 2 …).
- Name: you can type it right there.
- Dropdown: jumps straight to any channel without going through the others. Effects are listed first, with the name of the loaded effect.
- Colors: to set the channel color.
Below are the tabs: MIX · SENDS · EQ · DYN for inputs and tracks, and MIX · SENDS · EFFECT for effect returns.
15.2 MIX tab#
On the left:
- Large fader with its meter and the value in dB.
- PAN.
- MUTE and SOLO.
- On MAIN there is also MONITOR BAL (monitor output balance).
On the right, in cards:
- CHANNEL:
- ATT: the channel's input attenuator, from -42 to +6 dB.
- PHASE: inverts the phase (NRM = normal, INV = inverted).
- 48V: IN 1-8 only, VS-2480 (see 12.3).
- TRACK STATUS (tracks only): OFF / REC / PLAY.
- OFFSET (CHANNEL LINK) (odd channels): fader and pan adjustment for the pair linked on the console.
- OPTIONS: the same as the channel menu (link, ME, DCA, groups, views, copy/paste).
15.3 SENDS tab#
The channel's 8 sends to the auxes, each with its own fader, and the send pans for each pair (1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8).
15.4 EQ tab (equalizer)#
- EQ ON / OFF: turns the channel EQ on or off.
- Curve: shows how the sound ends up, from lows (left) to highs (right).
- The 4 colored points are the bands. Drag a point: left/right changes the frequency, up/down changes the gain. EQ has to be ON.
- Bands (each with its own color):
- LOW: GAIN and FREQ.
- LO-MID (low mids): GAIN, FREQ and Q (bandwidth).
- HI-MID (high mids): GAIN, FREQ and Q.
- HIGH: GAIN and FREQ.
- FILTER: type Off / LPF (low-pass) / HPF (high-pass, great for cutting lows on vocals) / BPF (band-pass) / BEF (band-reject), with FREQ and Q. On the VS-2000 the EQ has the 4 bands, without the filter.
- Gains go from -15 to +15 dB. Double-tap a knob to return it to its neutral value.
15.5 DYN tab (dynamics)#
- DYN ON / OFF: turns the channel dynamics on or off.
- Type:
- CMP: compressor.
- EXP: expander (lowers what is below the threshold, like a soft gate).
- EXP+CMP: both. The console allows it on up to 24 channels and in only one of the sections (inputs or tracks).
- Graph: input (bottom) versus output (left). The dotted lines are the thresholds (red = compressor, blue = expander).
- COMPRESSOR:
- THRESH: threshold, from -24 to 0 dB.
- RATIO: from 1:1 to ∞:1.
- ATTACK and RELEASE.
- LEVEL: output gain.
- AUTO GAIN: makes up the level automatically.
- KEY IN: which channel triggers the compressor; usually the channel itself.
- EXPANDER: THRESH (-80 to 0 dB), RATIO, ATTACK, RELEASE and KEY IN.
- The block that the chosen type doesn't use is dimmed.
15.6 EFFECT tab (on FX RTN 1-8)#
- Header: icon and color by effect type (reverb, delay, modulation, vocal, guitar, dynamics, EQ…), the loaded patch name and the effect type.
- Change patch…: opens the preset list with a search box (on the VS-2480, the 250 presets P000 to P249; on the other models, that model's presets; on the VS-880EX and VS-R880, which have no list of names, you choose the bank —Preset A, Preset B, User or Preset C— and the number). Type "Hall", "Delay", "Vocal" or the number.
- Some presets are dimmed on the even processors (FX2, FX4, FX6, FX8): they only work on FX1, FX3, FX5 and FX7, a limit of the console.
- In User you pick the bank and number to load your user patches, then tap Send.
- ⟳: reads the effect from the console again.
- Parameters: every parameter of the loaded effect, grouped by section, as knobs, buttons or lists. Changes happen in real time.
16 TRACKS: tracks and transport#
16.1 Track status#
Each track has its own OFF / REC / PLAY buttons:
- PLAY: the track plays back what was recorded.
- REC: the track is armed to record.
- OFF: the track is silent.
While the VS-2480 or the VS-2000 is playing or recording, the console only accepts OFF to PLAY or PLAY to OFF. The other buttons show a 🔒 and a notice appears at the top.
On the VS-1680, VS-1824, VS-1880, VS-880EX and VS-R880 each track has four states, in a 2×2 grid: MUTE / PLAY / REC / SRC (SOURCE: you hear the input). There the group button is called All MUTE.
16.2 Group actions#
- All PLAY / All OFF.
- Tap the names of several tracks to select them (☑) and use Selected REC to arm them all at once (only with the console stopped).
- Deselect clears the selection.
16.3 Large transport#
- ⟲ 0: goes back to the start.
- ⏪ and ⏩: rewind and fast forward until you press STOP. While the console rewinds or fast forwards, it does not report its position: the counter updates when it stops.
- ■ STOP and ▶ PLAY.
- ● REC (hold): you have to hold it down for 1 second.
16.4 Go to a minute#
With the "Go to minute" slider, the console jumps straight to that minute of the recording.
16.5 Markers#
- Type a name (for example "Chorus") and tap + Mark here: it saves the current position.
- Tap the marker and the console goes to that position. ✕ deletes it.
- Markers are shared across all tablets.
To use markers, the counter must be set to Time code (section 22.1).
16.6 DAW mode: the timeline#
The DAW button in the top bar switches to a recording-studio style view: tracks stacked one below the other, with time running to the right. MIXER takes you back to the console.
At the top, a small meter bridge. Choose TR (tracks), IN (inputs) or AUX. With METERS ON, the console switches to metering that section. On the right, the green box shows the active app project (section 19.1) and, below it in small type, the project (or song) the console has open.
The time ruler. It shows minutes and seconds, the markers (orange ▼) and the playhead (the red line, the console's position).
- Tap the ruler to send the console to that point.
- Drag the track area left or right to look at another part (it stops following the playhead).
- − / +: zoom out and zoom in. ⇥: follow the playhead again.
Each track has:
- The color stripe on the left: tap it to choose the track color.
- The name: tap it to change it (12 characters max). Name and color are the same as in the app's console.
- V1…V16: the take (V-Track) the track is using. Tap to see all 16 and choose another one.
- M (mute) and S (solo).
- OFF / REC / PLAY: the track status.
- A horizontal fader and the pan.
Recorded regions. The colored bars on the timeline are what was recorded on each track with the app's ● button: where it starts, where it ends and how long it lasts, on the selected take. If you record over a region, that part is replaced, just like on the console.
Regions are saved on the bridge phone: the next day, when you power everything up, they are still there. They are saved in the active project (section 19.1): each project has its own regions and markers, and when you switch projects the DAW shows the new one's. If there is no active project, they stay in a general list until you save one.
Takes (V-Tracks). Each track has 16 takes. To record another take without losing the previous one: tap V…, choose an empty take, put the track in REC and record. To compare, switch takes while the console is playing. In the takes box, the ones with a duration are the ones the app saw being recorded.
At the bottom:
- The jog wheel: turn it with your finger to move through the recording (clockwise goes forward, counterclockwise goes back). The closer the zoom (+), the finer the movement.
- The large counter.
- ⏮ to the start, ◀▼ / ▼▶ previous and next marker, ⏪ ⏩ ■ ▶ ● transport (you have to hold REC down).
- + Marker: marks the current position. Clear: erases the drawn regions (it does not touch the console).
- PUNCH and LOOP (VS-2480 and VS-2000, with extended control): turn the console's Auto Punch and Loop on and off. Their ranges show on the ruler: red for punch, green for loop (dimmer when they are off).
- Ranges: shows Punch In / Punch Out and Loop from / Loop to, each with = current position (sets it where the playhead is) and Go. They must be at least 1 second apart.
- Locators: the console's locators (up to 100, with names). + Locator at current position saves a new one; each one has: name, Go, ⤓ (move it to the current position) and ✕.
Console markers (VS-2480 and VS-2000). With extended control, the markers in the DAW and in TRACKS are the console's own: whatever you add, rename or delete in the app stays on the VS, and whatever you mark on the VS shows up in the app (it is re-read every minute and when you open the DAW). If the console has no markers and the app does (from an app project), the app sends them over once. Markers without a name show as M1, M2…
What the console does not allow over MIDI: deleting, cutting, moving or copying regions, undo, and viewing the waveform. You do that on the VS panel.
Projects. Tap the PROJECT box to see the active app project (with a button to go to App projects…) and the list of projects saved on the console's disk, with their dates. Over MIDI the console lets you see that list but not load or create projects on its disk: you do that on the VS panel.
If the console has a project open that is different from the app's active project, a yellow notice appears once (for each console project) at the top of the DAW with Load «…» (if there is already an app project linked to it) or Create project «…» (if there is none).
The wheel, the ruler and the markers need the counter in Time code: when you enter the DAW, if the console is set to measure/beat or clock + scene, the app switches it to TIME CODE on its own (this only changes how the position is shown: it does not touch the meters, the audio or the recording). For the counter to arrive, the console must have MIDI OUT SYNC Gen. = MTC (section 4.3).
17 METERS: the meter bridge#
A meter bridge style view, with 24 channels in three groups of 8, plus MON (monitor) and MASTER:
- Metered section: choose what the console meters (INPUT MIXER, TRACK MIXER, FX RETURN, AUX/DIR, physical inputs or outputs…). The channel names adjust to the section. Same as in MIX (section 12.6): with the console playing or recording, the change stays pending ("Metering TR · IN on STOP") and happens on its own when you press STOP.
- Each group has its own dB scale (0, -6, -12, -20…) and every meter has the tick marks, with 0 dB highlighted.
- Above each meter is the channel name, with its color stripe.
- ⛶ Full screen: ideal for dedicating a tablet or a screen to the meters.
18 ROUTE: the signal path#
Shows and changes the console's routing: which input feeds each channel, which buses each channel goes to, which track it records to, what feeds each effect and what comes out of each output. It needs extended control (section 22.1). The first time, tap ⟳ Read from console so the app learns the current routing; anything it doesn't know shows as "?".
18.1 Diagram#
Four columns: sources (physical inputs), channels, buses and tracks, and outputs. The input → channel (light blue), bus → output (green) and bus → effect (pink) connections are always shown. Tap a channel, a bus or a track to see its connections: which buses it goes to (orange) and which track it records to (red). Each bus shows how many channels feed it.
18.2 Inputs (patchbay)#
Which physical input (A.IN 1/2 … R-BUS) feeds each input channel. It works in pairs: the odd channel takes the odd input of the chosen pair, and the even channel takes the even one.
18.3 Recording#
Which track each source records to (inputs, tracks for bouncing, effect returns, AUX and DIR). The 24 tracks show at the top: in red the ones that have a source, and in orange the ones that have more than one (check it before recording).
18.4 Buses#
A grid of channels × buses (MIX, AUX 1-8, DIR 1-8). Tap a cell to turn the send on or off. Below it: whether each AUX and DIR takes the signal Pre or Post fader, and the AUX pair links.
18.5 Effects#
For each processor: which bus feeds it (Input: AUX or DIR) and whether it is inserted on the MASTER. Below, the per-channel insert grid: tap a cell to cycle through Off → Ins → InsL → InsR → InsS.
18.6 Outputs#
What comes out of each output: MONITOR, PHONES 1 and 2, AUX A and B, R-BUS, COAXIAL and OPTICAL. Further down, the Track Direct Out (recorder tracks straight to the outputs) and the recording monitor mode.
18.7 Routing profiles#
A profile saves all the routing the app knows, so you can send it again with one tap (for example "Band recording" and "Live show").
- Save current routing: type a name. If it already exists, it asks before replacing it.
- Load: tap twice (the second tap confirms). A progress bar appears while it is sent to the console.
- Overwrite: saves the current routing under that profile's name.
- ✕: deletes the profile.
- Export / import profiles: to take them to another bridge phone (section 22.4).
Scenes do not touch the routing, and profiles do not touch the mix: they are handled separately.
19 SCENES: projects and scenes#
SCENES has three tabs: Projects, App scenes and Console scenes (0-99).
19.1 Projects#
A project is everything about one job (a song, a session, a show), saved on the bridge phone:
- The console mix: faders, pans, sends, mutes, EQ, dynamics, effects (like an app scene).
- The routing (with extended control).
- The app's own data: DAW regions and markers, channel names and colors, DCA, mute groups, views, links, MOREME mixes and the names of the console scenes.
App projects can have any name you like, even if the console calls them something else, and you can load, save, overwrite, rename, export and delete them.
The active project shows at the top (and in the top bar, next to the counter). There are two ways things get saved, and it helps to understand the difference:
| What | When it is saved to the active project |
|---|---|
| Regions, markers, names, colors, DCA, groups, MOREME | Automatically, as they change. You never lose a take because you forgot to save. |
| The console mix and the routing | When you tap Save (or Overwrite). If it changed since last time, it says "unsaved mix" and the bar shows PROJECT *. |
Buttons:
- New: type a name and tap New. It creates a project with the console as it is now and an empty DAW (no regions or markers), and makes it active. This is what you use when you start a new song.
- Save as: the same, but it also copies the current regions and markers.
- Save (at the top, on the active project): saves the current mix and routing to the active project.
- Load (two taps: Send to the console?): makes that project active. The regions, markers, names and groups become its own, and it sends its mix and routing to the console (progress bar, about 15 seconds). Before that, everything from the previously active project is saved. On the active project the button is called Reload and takes you back to the saved mix.
- Overwrite (two taps): replaces that project's mix and routing with the current ones and makes it active.
- Rename: changes the name (Enter to confirm).
- Link to «…»: links it to the project (or song) the console has open right now. When you save or create a project, it is linked automatically.
- Export: downloads that project to a file, to back it up or take it to another bridge phone.
- ✕ (two taps): deletes the app project. It does not touch anything on the console or its disk.
- Close: stops working with an active project. Whatever you do afterward is not saved to any project until you save one.
- Export / import all projects: at the bottom of the page (section 22.4).
You can't have two projects with the same name (case doesn't matter): if it already exists, use Overwrite or choose another name.
App projects and console projects. The console saves the recorded audio and its own mix on its disk. The app cannot load or create projects on the console's disk over MIDI: you do that on the VS panel. What it can do is know which project the console has open (with extended control) and tell you when it doesn't match the app's active project: a yellow notice appears with Load «…» or Create project «…». The recommended workflow:
- On the console, open the project (or song) you are going to work on.
- On the tablet, if the notice offers Load, tap it; if it offers Create project, tap it (or type another name and tap New).
- Work and record from the app. Before switching projects on the console, tap Save.
19.2 App scenes#
They save the whole mix: faders, pans, sends, mutes, solos, EQ, dynamics, attenuators, phase, the effects, and the channel names and colors.
- Save: type a name and tap Save current state. If a scene with that name already exists, it asks Replace? and you have to tap again.
- Load: tap Load and then again on Send all to the console?. The app sends everything to the console, so it ends up exactly as it was when you saved, no matter what it had before. A progress bar appears; a full scene takes about 15 seconds.
- ✕ and Delete?: removes the scene.
- If a scene was saved without being able to read the effects, it says "· no FX": loading it does not touch the effects.
Special scenes:
- 🔒 BLANK console: sets the console "to zero" so you can start fresh:
- Channels and sends at -∞.
- Masters (MAIN and AUX) at 0 dB.
- Pans centered.
- EQ and dynamics off, no mutes or solos.
- It does not touch track status (REC/PLAY), names or phantom power.
- It cannot be deleted or replaced.
- Last session (auto): the app saves the state on its own every few seconds when something changes. If something goes wrong (a power cut, another scene loaded by mistake), load it to get back to where you were.
19.3 Console scenes (0-99)#
They recall the scenes saved on the console itself (the ones in its internal memory):
- Tap the number and confirm with Recall?.
- Next to each number you can type a name (for example "Song 3"), which is saved in the app.
- If the console is playing, it pauses and resumes. If it is recording, it ignores the change (and the app tells you).
- After the recall, the app reads the console again to show the new values.
App scenes or console scenes? App scenes are saved on the bridge phone, have names and can be managed from any tablet. Console scenes live on the console itself. You can use both.
Project or scene? A scene is just a mix (for example, the one for song 3 within a show). A project is the whole job: its mix, its routing, its regions, markers, names and groups. Console scene names are saved with the active project.
20 MOREME: each musician's personal monitor mix#
Each musician can run their own monitor mix (their AUX) from their phone, without touching anyone else's mix.
20.1 Give each musician their link#
Each musician joins the same WiFi and opens their personal link: the bridge address plus /monitor?aux= and their AUX number. For example, if the address is http://192.168.0.23:8080:
- Singer on AUX 1:
http://192.168.0.23:8080/monitor?aux=1 - Bass player on AUX 3:
http://192.168.0.23:8080/monitor?aux=3 - Drummer on AUX 5:
http://192.168.0.23:8080/monitor?aux=5
With that link:
- They can only change their own AUX. They can't touch the main mix or anyone else's. If they pick another AUX in I am, they switch to that AUX's link.
- No PIN needed, even if the bridge has one.
- Each musician should add it to their phone's home screen (section 8.3): it works like a "My monitor" app.
20.2 Choose which AUX you are#
At the top, next to I am, choose your AUX (AUX 1 … AUX 8, with its name if it has one, for example "AUX 3 · Bass"). You can change it at any time, and the phone remembers it for next time.
20.3 ME, REST and MASTER#
- ME ("my stuff"): works like a DCA. It starts at 0 dB. If you pull it down 6 dB, all your channels drop 6 dB and keep their balance. Moving a single channel doesn't move the ME fader. Double-tap returns it to 0 dB.
- REST: the same for the channels you marked as REST (the band).
- MUTE ME / MUTE REST: instantly silence your channels or the rest, only in your monitor. They don't mute the channel on the console, so the main mix and the other musicians' mixes don't change. When you unmute, each channel goes back to exactly the level it had.
- MASTER: the overall volume of your monitor.
20.4 CHANNELS: build your mix#
The CHANNELS tab lists every channel. Each row has:
- The channel name (with its color).
- OFF | ME | REST: what that channel is for you (one at a time):
- ME: it's yours, the ME fader moves it.
- REST: it's the band's, the REST fader moves it.
- OFF: not part of your mix. At first every channel is OFF: mark your channels as ME and the band channels you want to hear as REST. An OFF channel isn't moved by ME, REST or the MUTE buttons. If you set a channel that was ME or REST to OFF, its send drops to -∞. If you mark it again later, it gets its old level back. If an OFF channel still reaches your monitor (someone raised its send from the console), the row says "not in your mix · arrives at … dB" and shows a Silence button.
- A horizontal fader (on ME and REST): how much of that channel you have in your monitor. Double-tap = 0 dB.
- The value in dB (or MUTE if that group is muted).
The list is always in numeric order (IN 1-24, TR 1-24, FX 1-8). Marking a channel doesn't move it. At the top you can filter: All / ME / REST / OFF. Your ME channels show in orange and OFF channels are dimmed.
20.5 MY MIXES: save and load#
In the MY MIXES tab:
- Save: type a name (for example "Slow song" or "Acoustic") and tap Save. While you type, the faders at the top hide so the keyboard doesn't cover the box.
- If a mix with that name already exists, a notice appears and the button changes to Overwrite?: tap it again to replace it.
- Overwrite (on each mix): replaces it with your monitor as it is now (confirm with Overwrite?). Use it to update a mix with your latest changes. It's saved on the bridge phone, so you can use it from any phone.
- Load: tap Load and confirm with Load?. Only your mix goes to the console: your sends, your AUX master, and which channels are ME, REST or OFF. Nobody else's mix changes.
- ✕: deletes the mix.
Each AUX has its own mixes.
20.6 Phones: MOREME only#
A phone always opens MOREME (there's no access to the full console: the screen is too small to run it). Tablets and laptops open the full console.
20.7 From the main console#
The tablet console doesn't build personal mixes: each musician picks their ME and REST channels on their phone. The operator can still see and adjust each AUX's sends in SENDS. If a channel is in a musician's ME, it shows the ME tag there.
21 The quick panel (Ui≡)#
The Ui≡ button on the top bar opens a side panel with shortcuts:
- GO TO: jump straight to INPUTS, TRACKS, FX RTN or AUX MST.
- VIEWS: your own views.
- MUTE: the mute groups. One tap mutes or unmutes the whole group. MUTE ALL / UNMUTE ALL mutes or unmutes every channel.
- TRANSPORT: ⟲ 0, ■, ▶ and access to TRACKS.
In SETUP → Preferences you can keep it always visible.
22 SETUP: settings#
22.1 Console#
- Console model: at the very top. The app handles the VS-2480, VS-2000, VS-1880, VS-1824, VS-1680, VS-880EX and VS-R880 (it adapts channels, tracks and sends to each one, and the settings table below changes with the model). The first time a console connects, the app shows "Console detected" so you can confirm the model. Whatever belongs to a single model is pointed out in each part of this guide.
- Setting up the console: the table from section 4 for the selected model, always at hand.
- Extended control: it comes on, and you should leave it that way. It enables real mute and solo, EQ, dynamics, phase, attenuator, effects, phantom (VS-2480), automatic meters and reading the console state. Without it, mute pulls the fader to -∞ and there's no EQ, dynamics or effects.
- Console DEVICE ID: must match the console's DEVICE ID (17 by default).
- Mixer control (C.C. or Excl (recommended)): this is the console's MIXER CONTROL TYPE setting, which has a single value. The app changes it on the console and adapts. With C.C. the console reports faders, pan, sends, EQ and status instantly, but doesn't report mutes, solos, effects or routing changed on its panel: the app asks for them again every 5 seconds (with the console stopped), and for routing every 15 seconds while ROUTE is open. With Excl the console reports everything instantly (tested on the VS-2480 and VS-1880: fader, mute, status and routing), and the app sends everything by SysEx. In Excl the console doesn't listen to Control Change from other devices. Recommended: Excl. If you haven't chosen, the app switches the console to Excl by itself when it connects (on every model). Choose C.C. only if you also control it from another MIDI device by Control Change (the app respects that choice).
- Console transport (MMC MODE) (VS-2480 and VS-2000): with MASTER the console reports its PLAY, STOP and REC buttons, so the DAW also draws what you record from the console. To make the console follow the app's transport, the app switches it to SLAVE for a moment and back to MASTER (you won't notice). With SLAVE the console follows the app but doesn't report its buttons. Recommended: MASTER.
- Effect boards (VS-2480 and VS-2000): how many effects the console has. On the VS-2480, how many VS8F-2 boards (1 = the factory one, FX1-2; each extra board adds two effects, up to FX1-8); on the VS-2000, FX1-2 from the factory and up to FX1-6 with expansion boards. The console doesn't report this over MIDI: choose it here and the app shows only those effects.
- MB-24 meters (VS-2480): Post fader (recommended) or Pre fader.
- MB-24 counter (VS-2480): Time code (recommended, matches the VS display), Bar / beat, or Clock + scene.
- Read console state: reads everything from the console again (faders, pans, sends, mutes, EQ, dynamics, effects, routing, status). It happens by itself on connect. While it reads, the READING MIXER bar appears (20 to 30 seconds: the console answers one parameter at a time).
- Test mute (Track 1): mutes and unmutes Track 1 to check that the console accepts these controls.
22.2 Names#
All channels on one screen so you can name them and give them colors quickly: inputs, tracks, effect returns and AUXes. AUX names (for example "Vocal monitor") show up in SENDS and MOREME.
22.3 Groups#
- DCA (4): a DCA is a fader that moves several channels at once while keeping their proportions (for example "Drums" or "Backing vocals"). Enter the name, tap Choose channels and check the channels. A DCA layer appears in MIX.
- Mute groups (6): to mute several channels with one tap from the quick panel.
- Views (6): your own layers with the channels you want, in the order you want (for example "Vocals": IN 5, IN 6, IN 7, TR 12). They appear as layers in MIX.
22.4 Backups#
Saves what you built in the app to a file (.json), as a backup or to move it to another bridge phone.
- Export: check what to include (projects, scenes, routing profiles, names and colors, DCA and groups, MOREME personal mixes, DAW markers and regions, console settings) and tap Download backup. The file lands in the tablet's or laptop's downloads.
- Import: Choose file… shows what it contains (which console it's from, the date and how many items of each type). Check what you want and tap Load selected. Anything with the same name is replaced.
- Projects, scenes and routing profiles only load on the same console model they were saved with.
- Importing sends nothing to the console: projects, scenes and profiles apply when you load them. If you import the active project, the new version is used the next time you load it.
- You can also export / import in SCENES → Projects (all projects, or just one with its Export button), in SCENES → App scenes (scenes only) and in ROUTE → Profiles (profiles only).
- If the bridge has a PIN, unlock the tablet before you export or import.
22.5 MIDI Monitor#
A tool for diagnostics and tech support: it shows the messages going back and forth between the app and the console. You don't need it day to day. If support asks for it:
- ⏸ Pause / ▶ Resume, Clear and Export (saves a text file you can send).
- You can select and copy the log text.
22.6 Preferences#
These are per device (each tablet has its own):
- Language: it is shared by all devices: what you pick here applies to the other tablets, the MOREME phones and the bridge phone. Automatic = each device follows its browser language (Spanish if the browser is in Spanish, English otherwise); Español or English set it for everyone. When it changes, the screens reload by themselves.
- Fine fader by default: starts with FINE on.
- REC: hold for 1 s to record: recommended on.
- Quick panel (Ui≡) always visible.
- Keyboard and footswitch shortcuts: with a keyboard or a Bluetooth "page turner" pedal: Space play/stop, ← → (or PageUp / PageDown) previous / next marker, Home go to start, M marker at the current position, Shift+R record.
- Install on the tablet: how to add it to the home screen.
23 Locks: padlock and PIN#
23.1 Padlock (screen lock)#
The 🔓 padlock on the top bar locks the controls of that tablet, so nothing moves by accident (when you wipe the screen, set it down, or someone touches it).
- Lock: one tap (it turns into 🔒).
- Unlock: press and hold for 1 second.
23.2 PIN#
If a PIN was set on the bridge phone (section 7.5):
- New tablets connect in read-only mode.
- The bar shows the orange notice 🔐 LOCKED — tap to enter the PIN (on tablets, just the orange padlock 🔐, left of the full-screen button). Tap it, type the PIN and tap Enter.
- The tablet remembers the PIN and gets straight in next time.
- Personal monitors (MOREME by link) don't need a PIN.
24 Tips for live and studio use#
Before you start:
- Charge the bridge phone or use the hub with a charger.
- Turn on the router, the console and the phone. Start the bridge.
- Open the console on the tablets and wait a few seconds while it reads the state.
- Open the project you'll work on at the console, and load its app project from SCENES → Projects (or tap Load in the yellow notice). For new work, create one with New. For a show with a starting scene, load it from SCENES (or use BLANK console to start from scratch).
- Send each musician their monitor link.
- Lock the bridge phone's screen: control keeps working.
During the show or session:
- Use the padlock on tablets that are sitting on a stand.
- To record, hold REC for 1 second, always from the app if you want to see the regions in the DAW.
- If something odd happens to the mix, SCENES has Last session (auto) to go back.
- If the WiFi drops, the console keeps playing. When the network comes back, the tablets reconnect by themselves.
When you finish:
- Tap Save on the active project (or save the scene with a name, for example the date and venue).
- Every now and then, export a backup of your projects (SCENES → Projects → Export / import all projects).
- Tap Stop bridge on the phone.
Precautions:
- Don't turn on phantom (48V) with the channel up or with ribbon mics connected.
- Don't move the same fader from two tablets at once: the last move wins.
- The VS-2480 meters one section at a time: with several tablets on different layers, some meters show a hatch pattern.
25 What you can't do (console limits)#
These things don't depend on the app: the console doesn't allow them over MIDI (checked against the official VS MIDI manual and tested with a real VS-2480). You do them on the console's panel.
Recording and editing (DAW)
- Seeing what's recorded on disk and the waveform: the console doesn't report it. The DAW only draws what the app saw being recorded.
- Deleting, cutting, moving, copying or inserting regions or phrases (Track Edit / Phrase Edit), undo/redo, scrub and preview: there are no MIDI messages for these.
- Loading, creating, saving or deleting projects on disk: not possible (only the list and the open project can be read). App projects (section 19.1) are saved on the phone.
- Automix: you can't view or edit automation curves (the console doesn't give out its points). Over MIDI there are only the Manual / Write / Read modes of each channel and which parameters get recorded (the app doesn't show them yet).
- Markers: up to 1000. The console ignores a new one less than 0.1 ms from another. Locators: 100. Punch and Loop: start before end, and at least 1 s between them.
Mixing
- Preamp gain (GAIN knobs): it's analog, it doesn't go through MIDI.
- EZ Routing: can't be used over MIDI (per-channel routing can, section 18).
- Console scene names: the console doesn't report them. The names you see are the ones you type in the app.
- Track status while the console is playing or recording (VS-2480 and VS-2000): it only accepts OFF ↔ PLAY.
- Phantom (48V) on every model except the VS-2480: only from the console's panel.
- Meters on the VS-2000: the console doesn't send them over MIDI; levels are shown on its display.
What the console reports (and what it doesn't)
- With MIXER CONTROL TYPE = C.C. the console doesn't report mutes, solos, effects or routing changed on its panel: the app asks for them again every few seconds (with the console stopped). With Excl it reports everything instantly (section 22.1).
- With MMC MODE = SLAVE the console doesn't report its PLAY/STOP/REC buttons (what you record from the console isn't drawn in the DAW). With MASTER it does report them, but it doesn't follow other devices' transport: the app switches it to SLAVE for a moment every time you press play, stop or locate, and then back to MASTER.
- Effect boards (VS-2480 and VS-2000): the console doesn't report how many boards it has (it answers reads for all effects even if boards are missing): choose it in SETUP → Console → Effect boards.
- Effect parameter changes made on the panel: in testing they didn't arrive over MIDI. If you change an effect on the console, the app reads it again when you open EDIT → EFFECT or when you change patch.
- Meters (VS-2480): one section at a time is metered (inputs, tracks, returns…). Whatever isn't being metered shows a hatch pattern.
- Scenes recalled on the panel: the console does not report the mix change over MIDI. After changing scenes on the console, use SETUP → Console → Read console state (see 19.3).
- Counter in TIME CODE: arrives by MTC (UTILITY → SYNC → MIDI OUT SYNC Gen. = MTC). In measure/beat and clock + scene it arrives through the MB-24.
- Full console read: the console answers one parameter at a time, so reading everything takes 20 to 30 seconds (READING MIXER bar). Loading a full scene or project takes about 15 seconds.
26 Troubleshooting#
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The tablet won't open the address | The tablet and the bridge phone are on the same WiFi; the bridge is started; type the exact address, with http:// and :8080; turn off the router's "client isolation"; don't use the guest network. |
| The address changed from one day to the next | The router gave the phone a different address. Reserve the phone's IP in the router (section 6.2). |
| "(model) not connected" (for example "VS-1880 not connected") | USB-MIDI adapter plugged in; OTG cable or hub working; try unplugging and replugging the adapter. The phone should show "MIDI: (name)" in green. |
| The console doesn't respond to the app | MIDI cables crossed (OUT → IN); try swapping them. Check the VS settings (section 4), especially that MIXER CONTROL TYPE matches what you chose in SETUP → Console → Mixer control, and CONTROL LOCAL Sw = On. |
| The console stops sending everything (not even meters) | Unplug and replug the USB-MIDI interface. It happened once in testing and this fixed it. |
| The app doesn't notice what I move on the console | MIDI OUT/THRU = Out on the VS; the cable goes VS MIDI OUT → adapter IN. |
| Lots of controls show "?" | Wait a few seconds after connecting. If they stay, use SETUP → Console → Read console state. Check SysEx.Tx Sw = On and the DEVICE ID. |
| Mute, EQ, dynamics or effects do nothing | Extended control on (SETUP → Console); on the VS: SysEx.Rx Sw = On, Effect C.C. Rx Sw = On, Effect P.C. Rx Sw = On; same DEVICE ID in the app and on the console. Try Test mute (Track 1). |
| The meters don't move | On the VS: EXT LEVEL METER = MB24, DISPLAY SECTION and METER POSITION (section 4.2). With POST fader, channels with the fader down don't show. METERS ON. Check whether it's a different layer from the one the console is metering (it shows a hatch pattern). |
| I changed layers during play and the meters show a hatch pattern | Normal on the VS-2480: it doesn't change what it meters while playing or recording. Next to the button it says "IN on STOP" (or the layer you asked for): press STOP and it switches by itself (section 12.6). |
| Some channels show a striped hatch pattern | The console is metering another section. With METERS ON it adjusts when you change layers. If another tablet is on another layer, the last one wins. |
| The counter doesn't match the VS display | SETUP → Console → MB-24 counter → Time code. |
| Control drops when the phone screen is locked | Battery exclusion and manufacturer settings (section 7.4). |
| The phone app closed | Open it again and start the bridge. If "An error was logged" appears, tap Copy and send it to support. |
| An effect preset won't load | Some presets only work on FX1, FX3, FX5 and FX7 (they're dimmed on the even ones). On the VS: Effect P.C. Rx Sw = On. |
| I changed scenes on the console and the tablet shows a different mix | The console doesn't report scene changes made on its panel: SETUP → Console → Read console state (section 19.3). |
| I recorded and the region doesn't show in the DAW | It was recorded with the console's REC and the VS-2480 (or the VS-2000) is in MMC MODE = SLAVE: switch it to MASTER (SETUP → Console). On the other models, record with the app's ● (section 16.6). |
| The counter stays blank with TIME CODE | UTILITY → SYNC → MIDI OUT SYNC Gen. = MTC (section 4.3). |
| Effects show up that the console doesn't have | SETUP → Console → Effect boards: choose how many VS8F-2 boards you have. |
| The DAW shows regions from another song | Load the matching app project (SCENES → Projects, or the DAW's yellow notice). Regions belong to each project. |
| The console scene doesn't change | The VS ignores the change while recording. SCENE P.C. Rx Sw = On. |
| A tablet can't move anything | Is the padlock 🔒 on? Hold it for 1 s. Is the orange padlock 🔐 (LOCKED) showing? Tap it and enter the PIN. |
| Holding something down brings up the browser's copy/paste menu | Reload the page (or close and reopen it) to get the latest version. |
